You don't need to ever buy hot chocolate mix at the store with this handy recipe. It's sweet without being too sweet, dark without being too dark, and you can go fancy on the toppings. Mix it once and store it in a cool and dry place during the winter months. It'll be perfect for all your family hikes!
  • ½ cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 Tbsp potato (or corn) starch
  • ½ cup (85g) dark chocolate chips
  • ½ cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 vanilla bean or ¼ tsp dried vanilla powder
  • ⅛ tsp sea salt
  1. Combine all the ingredients in a mixer.
  2. Pulse until quite smooth.
  3. Store in an airtight jar in a cool and dark place for 3 months.
  4. To make a cup of hot chocolate, add 3 Tbsp of your hot chocolate mix and add hot water or milk. For small kids' cups, add 2 Tbsp of the mix and hot water or milk.
  5. Toppings: cinnamon powder, sprinkles, whipped cream, mini meringues/marshmallows, candy canes, chili powder (for adults).
